1) Job Description:
Heritage Saskatchewan is hiring a student to conduct research relating to volunteerism in the heritage sector in Saskatchewan. We are seeking information about heritage-related volunteerism in Saskatchewan through data analysis from pre-existing research, as well as new research by the candidate (via interviews, surveys or other methods deemed applicable) to understand the impact and importance of volunteers in the heritage sector (including tangible and intangible heritages); the needs of the sector for volunteers; and the needs of volunteers within the sector.
The pandemic had a profound impact on the well-being of people in Saskatchewan, including the amount of volunteerism occurring in the province. According to a 2022 Saskatchewan Nonprofit Partnership (SNP) report, “Organizations are reporting difficulty in attracting new volunteers and/or re-engaging individuals who had volunteered with them prior to the pandemic. A recent Statistics Canada report confirms these challenges are being experienced by the nonprofit sector across the country. Data indicates that a majority of organizations are facing challenges related to volunteerism, with 67% reporting a shortage of new volunteers, half reporting challenges with retention, 42% reporting that volunteers aren’t able to commit long term, and one quarter reporting volunteer burnout and stress (‘Volunteerism in Saskatchewan and the Impacts of Covid-19,’ December, 2022) In recognition of rapid changes including changing attitudes towards volunteerism, Heritage Saskatchewan is interested in examining the state of volunteerism within the heritage sector. How we can best address those changes? How do volunteers help safeguard diverse heritage? What is the impact of the loss of volunteers on community stories and well-being?

The intern will compile findings into a format that is easily referenced and referred to for public communications. The research will be used internally and externally for advocacy purposes, and results will be communicated through our various communications channels and networks.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills in English; be comfortable with working independently; be able to easily converse with a diverse range of people in terms of demographics, diversity of opinions and worldviews; and possess an ability to represent our organization in a professional manner. The incumbent must be computer literate, with the ability to establish a user-friendly database for the accumulated information. The student shall be required to travel within the prescribed area for engagement sessions with individuals and organizations and therefore must possess a valid driver's license.

A background in any of these areas of studies would be an asset: History, Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Heritage Conservation, Folklore, Museum Studies, Library Science, Political Science,
Journalism, Not-for-profit/Voluntarily Sector/Arts Management, or another Liberal Arts/Humanities program.

As an organization that values diversity, we support and encourage students from diverse cultural backgrounds to apply.

2) Compensation
Timeframe: May 13, 2024 to August 31, 2024 (totaling 16 weeks) at 35 hours/week
Wages: $11,200.00 ($20.00/hour x 35hours/week x 16 weeks); Heritage Saskatchewan will cover mandatory costs such as Worker's Compensation, CPP, etc. Heritage Saskatchewan will also offer financial contribution toward Internet and cellphone expenses of the successful applicant during the 16-week timeframe.
