JOB POSTING: Collections Assistant Internship

Job Type: Full Time, 24 Week Contract
Application Deadline: Friday, April 26, 2024.
Job Term: Approximately June 3- November 18 (24 Weeks)
Location: Ukrainian Museum of Canada, 910 Spadina Crescent East, Saskatoon, SK

The Ukrainian Museum of Canada (UMC), established in 1936, is North America’s oldest museum dedicated to Ukrainian culture. Our extensive collection of 30,000 objects and artifacts encompasses textiles, fine and folk art, pysanky, ceramics, and a library and archives. Under new leadership since 2022, we are a dynamic team committed to reshaping the role of heritage museums in Canada.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Registrar and Collections Officer
• Collaborate on a comprehensive collections audit.
• Assist in the preparation of artifacts and artwork for exhibitions.
• Conduct curatorial research and contribute to exhibition development.
• Catalogue new acquisitions and maintain the collection database.
• Contribute to exhibition preparation and installation.

Qualifications:

To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible).
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number).
• Be between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment.
• Be a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate).
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
• Proactive, creative, and eager to learn.
• Genuine interest in Ukrainian/Ukrainian Canadian history and culture.
• Ukrainian language skills are considered an asset.
• Not previously employed through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program.
• All applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. Note that priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.
